Areoi

The Seed of the Areoi is a beautiful windering by a French artist called Paul Gauguin. It gives us an idea of what the island of Tahiti could be before the process of French colonization, it represents the disease of civilization. This painting is actually impressive in many ways, from the style showing the influences of the aborigine art of the South peaceable and other non-European styles even though the artist was French, to the message.
This painting is of a naked woman who is set on a big rock that is covered with a non-white cloth, which has different white symbols around its ledges, and has a blue bird in her left hand; apparently she is cater it with arrestds. This is probably the reason for the paintings name. She is not smiling but she does not look sad either, she looks actually calm and relaxed. At eldest glance she looks Indian to me, but by seeing well-nigh her facial features such as her eyes, nose and lips I know that she is a black woman. On the bottom it is possible to see a red and yellow rug and a eye table with some fresh fruits on it. In the place setting there are mountains, some yellow palms, trees, pink flowers, honey oil grass, a blue sky with some clouds; a very natural and quiet view.




At the beginning it seemed like Te aa no Areois (The Seed of the Areoi) was calico by Gauguin to show us how West and Native cultures were getting mixed harmoniously in Tahiti. The picture transmits a quiet and relaxed environment. However, The Museum of Modern Art of tender Yorks points out that:
In spring 1891 Gauguin traveled to the South Pacific island of Tahiti, then a French colony. He hoped to find an riveting paradise, far from the modern metropolis of Paris. However, by the time of Gauguins reach Tahiti had been profoundly altered by French colonization: penury and sickness were rampant.
