There were four major genes that rails to the French Revolution: social, economic, political and intellectual (The economic factor being the major cause).
Before the revolution, France was ruled by an sacrosanct monarchy, part of the ancient regime. France was divided into three classes.

France was ruled by Louis xvi, a great power who believed he had overlord Right to rule France. Louis XIV was a poor draw and was easily influenced by his wife, Queen Marie Antoinette.

Louis XVI had to deal with the many problems left behind by his father, Louis XV, who was a poor leader and lead to the loss of the thrones prestige unlike his father ahead him, Louis XIV. Louis XVI was inefficient to cope with State affairs, was indecisive and lacked in self-confidence. His wife and the courtiers of Versailles influenced him greatly due to his lack of firmness and self-belief. The gap between the moneyed and the poor widened. The anger instilled in the hearts of the French peck due to their kings severe lack of leading only favoured the outbreak of the revolution.
